June Who’s DDM?

School gets out this month. Summer holidays are almost here. That means lots of activity for the next several weeks. I have to make sure I am healthy and in shape enough to keep up.

EvieG is having her Kindergarten graduation and will be in school full time next September. Spark Plug has enjoyed her nursery school with the exception of a few conniptions which resulted in a return to the car and a nice, long drive through the countryside as she and The Destroyer snoozed and drooled in the back as I sipped coffee.

But now I am off coffee and all caffeine. And I have changed my diet. I am drinking my 8 glasses of water a day and have lost 4 lbs so far. I suffered horrible headaches for the first 2 days of my detox as my body yelled and screamed at me; clearly unhappy with the fact that I took its drug of choice away. Cold turkey.

We are relatively healthy, but there is certainly room for improvement. We need more veggies and less starch. We have organics in our diet and whole grain everything, but we sometimes rely on the fruit and muffins and animal crackers too much. We are doing a little bit of an alteration.

I started presenting the Wee Ladies with fresh veggies and dip. For snack. Instead of granola bars and grapes. I love watching The Destroyer lick the tzatziki off the broccoli like she is licking an ice cream cone and then putting the broccoli back on the plate. They are all very interested in this stuff and even went for the almonds. I might as well see if they can tolerate nuts. I am allergic to tree nuts and so if I can’t enjoy them, someone else should. We are all cutting down our sugar intake and I am excited to see whether Spark Plug will even out in her moods. It would be great if she cut down on the whole monkey jumping and head spinning. We are trying to up The Destroyer in her protein. I am trying to break her habit of going into the cupboard and hauling out anything cracker-ish. She is also known to hand me the oils and vinegars for those lovely salads she refuses to try. She helps herself to the fridge and often grabs a yogurt tube and bites in the middle with her sharp canines where she pierces the tube and sucks the strawberry yogurt like a vampire sucking blood. And she looks like a vampire; eyes wide and glazed, cackling from behind the plastic. And then she finishes. You can see the sugar enter her blood stream as she drops the tube, her shoulders fall, she settles down, and remains calm. Until she needs another hit.

We are looking for moderation. Sugar is a mandatory part of childhood. Too much makes crazy people. Too little makes crazy people. I don’t want the Wee Ladies to binge on goodies because they never get any and I don’t want them becoming total addicts as their behaviour changes and I get notes sent home from school from the teacher requesting a meeting about my kid. I’ll take somewhere in between. I expect them to go into their Halloween candy in the middle of the night and polish off all the mini-Kit Kats and I anticipate receiving the odd note home from school.

I just hope they learn that it’s okay to have the side of veggies instead of fries and then a dessert with whipped cream on top. With a cherry.

All’s I’m sayin’s all.
